Mr. John Paulson

1955–present

The Investor Who Bet Against the Housing Bubble

Biography

John Alfred Paulson is an American investor and founder of Paulson & Co., established in 1994. He began his career in finance working in investment banking and mergers and acquisitions before establishing his own hedge fund. He gained international recognition for identifying vulnerabilities in the U.S. subprime mortgage market before the global financial crisis.

Trading Methods

Paulson became known for event-driven and contrarian investing. His strategies included merger arbitrage, distressed securities, and investments designed to benefit from major changes in asset valuations. During the housing bubble, he purchased credit default swaps linked to mortgage-backed securities, allowing his funds to profit when those securities deteriorated. His approach emphasized detailed research, identifying mispriced risks, and taking positions when market expectations differed from his analysis.

Greatest Successes

Paulson's most famous achievement came in 2007, when his funds reportedly earned approximately $15 billion in profits from trades related to the collapse of the U.S. subprime mortgage market. Paulson himself was widely reported to have earned approximately $3.7 billion that year. His housing-market trade became one of the most widely discussed investment successes in modern financial history.

Failures and Setbacks

Paulson experienced substantial losses in later years, particularly from concentrated investments and incorrect expectations about economic developments. Some of his funds suffered major declines in 2011, including losses associated with financial-sector investments. His career illustrates that correctly predicting one major market event does not guarantee success in future investments. Paulson & Co. later transitioned away from managing outside investor capital.

Lessons for Modern Traders

  • Research financial markets beyond prevailing public opinion.
  • Understand the risks hidden inside complex financial products.
  • Recognize that major market opportunities can emerge from mispriced assets.
  • Manage concentration risk even when an investment thesis appears convincing.
  • Do not assume past extraordinary success guarantees future results.
  • Study both the potential reward and the maximum possible loss before investing.
