Mr. Jesse Livermore
1877–1940
The Great Bear of Wall Street
Biography
Jesse Lauriston Livermore was an American stock and commodities speculator. Born in Massachusetts, he began working at a brokerage quotation board as a teenager. He developed a remarkable ability to study price movements and became one of the most famous traders of the early twentieth century.
Trading Methods
Livermore studied price action, market trends, pivotal price levels, and trading volume. He preferred to trade in the direction of major market movements rather than constantly predict small fluctuations. He also emphasized patience, waiting for confirmation, and increasing positions when the market supported his original judgment.
Greatest Successes
Livermore became famous for profiting from major market declines, including the Panic of 1907 and the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Historical accounts estimate that his profits during the 1929 crash reached approximately $100 million, although precise figures are difficult to verify.
Failures and Setbacks
Despite his extraordinary successes, Livermore suffered several devastating financial losses and bankruptcies. His experiences demonstrated the dangers of excessive leverage, changing trading discipline, and allowing emotions to influence decisions. He died in 1940.
