Mr. Bruce Kovner

Born 1945

The Global Macro Trading Pioneer

Biography

Bruce Stanley Kovner is an American investor and hedge fund manager. He began his trading career in the 1970s and later worked at Commodities Corporation, where he learned from experienced traders including Michael Marcus. In 1983, he founded Caxton Associates, which became a prominent global macro hedge fund. Kovner is also known for his philanthropic activities.

Trading Methods

Kovner developed a global macro trading approach based on studying economic trends, monetary policies, interest rates, currencies, commodities, and international markets. He combined fundamental economic analysis with technical market signals. Risk management was central to his philosophy, including using predetermined exit points, controlling position sizes, and reassessing trades when market conditions changed.

Greatest Successes

Kovner became one of the prominent global macro traders of his generation. Under his leadership, Caxton Associates developed a strong long-term investment reputation and managed substantial institutional capital. His career was featured in Jack Schwager's Market Wizards, where he discussed his trading philosophy, risk management, and experiences in international financial markets.

Failures and Setbacks

Kovner has described early trading experiences that taught him important lessons about risk. In one well-known account, he made a substantial profit trading soybean futures but later lost much of that gain after failing to manage his position effectively. This experience reinforced the importance of protective exits and disciplined risk control. As with other private traders, complete records of his losses are not publicly available.
